What’s the news in Skoghall? For starters, this book is taking far longer than I thought it would. I thought it would be out by now. I really did.
As John Lennon said, life is what happens to you when you’re busy making other plans. Life has been happening, from a teaching job I couldn’t pass up to a flooded basement, to lots of awesome editorial work.
I’ve got the illustrations and I’m revising the manuscript. It’s just rather slow going at the moment. And not for any artsy reason, like waiting for the muse. I don’t believe in waiting for the muse. I’m also not in a creative mode right now. I’m in a tedious revision mode. I like reading a print out of my book and marking it up in pencil. I don’t like taking that marked up manuscript back to the computer and slowly clicking my way through one change after another. But, this is part of the process of making a book, and it’s unavoidable. So I will keep clicking away and one day soon, I’ll get on to the next task, design and layout.
I love design and layout. It is a different form of creativity and when I finish with that, I’ll have a copy of my book I can hold in my hands, turn in the light, and (once it’s well and truly finished) put on the market.
Notice I said well and truly finished, not perfected. As I told one of my editing clients the other day, “If this book comes out perfect, all the books that come after it will be a disappointment.” So if you find a mistake or two in this book, let me know so I can fix them, but realize I’m okay with that…for now. Part of the fun of being an artist is that there is always room to grow.
Coming…one of these days in the not too distant future:
